This Thanksgiving for me was filled with tears, smiles, and stuffing my face with food. My family and I all had to squeeze in our small car and we were three seats short. With me being the smallest I had to lay across everyones lap in the backseat which was nowhere near fun with the Thanksgiving traffic and driving of my teenage brother on busy California highways for two hours. The whole way was filled with complaining of my grandfather in the front seat, bickering with my mother, and my grandmother lecturing my brother about the history of crashes on every road we came across. My brother had never driven so far in his life and had never had any experience on a highway or anything above fifty miles an hour so we were all a bit nervous--even with all the fighting and rowdy noise we caused. The whole car ride I was being tossed around like a rag doll across my families laps and worrying about the food that I carried for my uncle's house. When we finally arrived at my Aunt and Uncle's house we were relieved to get away from the car...and each other. You can't imagine the frustration we withheld when my Uncle opened the door and said,"We're having a vegan christmas this year!"
My grandfather and I went straight to the door, both muttering,"Let's go back! There's no way!"
My Uncle laughed and said it was a joke, that he wouldn't put us through the 'pain' of dining with my Aunt and Cousin who were having a vegan Thanksgiving. My cousin, who has always been a fan of dressing in all her rock rags and goth galore, was dressed like the 'Princess of The Dark' as she put it; with her red velvet dress that had a sweetheart lined top and red netting sleeves, black fishnets, black leather pointed toe creeper shoes that added two inches on her heigh, her black lip piercings, and deep scarlet lipstick. We all loved the dress but my family didn't like the rest of the outfit all that much. All was forgotten about her outfit when my uncle got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend of five years before the feast. Afterwards they headed to her family to tell the news of her pregnancy, leaving our whole family to watch football and yell at the TV. After the football game my cousins and I went into the ' Princess of The Dark's ' bedroom and listened to music while laughing at stories of when we were kids. We began to tease each other like we always did, forgetting about all the horror movie posters and cardboard cut outs of killers all over the red and black painted room, and even took out a guitar or two to let my cousins battle it out over a few old 80's rock songs.
